Support League of Northern Democrats to address challenges, Kazir tells Nigerians
Lt. Gen. Alwali Kazir,a former Chiefs of Army Staff has called on Nigerians to support the newly formed League of Northern Democrats (LND) to address challenges facing the North and the country generally.
Kazir, also a former Military Governor of Kwara, made the call in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, describing the formation of the LND as a welcome initiative while hosting its leaders.
He said after reading the concept note and communique of the group, he was convinced that it would help to address the current negative trends afflicting the region.
“I was told of the formation and activities of the LND by some close associates, and after going through its various publications,I became convinced that it is the right place to be,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the LND was convened by Dr Umar Ardo, an astute academia and politician at a meeting attended by critical Northern elites on August 20.
The league which has Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau, a former Kano State Governor as its chairman, was set up to help address the challenges confronting the North, especially insecurity.
“I am happy that we still have thinking and patriotic people left in the present chaotic situation of the North.
“No matter who or where you are, so long as you come from what used to be the protectorate of Northern Nigeria, then you are a Northerner.
“And it is your duty to help make the North worthy of living,”Kazir said, pledging commitment and support to the the league and charging it to live up to its mission.
NAN further reports that the league is a coalition of two groups within the northern elite, consisting of individuals who had distinguished themselves in various sectors of public, private service.
It also has as members, renowned past leaders, patriots, distinct men and women from the North that served the country and left behind legacies of service and values.
The league which plans a summit in October to address the issues of the North according to its conveners is non-partisan, non ethnic and devoid of religious affiliations. (https:newsatlarge.ng)
