Breaking: ASUU finally suspends strike after marathon NEC meeting
The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has suspended its 8-month-old industrial action conditionally.
The decision to suspend the strike was reached at a marathon National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of ASUU held at its Abuja secretariat from Thursday, October 13, to the early hours of Friday, October 14.
The suspension of the industrial action was confirmed by a member of ASUU’s NEC who does not want to be mentioned, although an official pronouncement to the effect was still being awaited.
The NEC meeting was held by ASSU leadership to determine its next line of action after its various branches met and deliberated on the recent Court of Appeal ruling..
The Court of Appeal had ordered the striking lecturers to suspend the strike before its appeal on the ruling ordering lecturers to resume work could be heard.
Members of the union’s National Executive Committee, which comprised chairmen of its state chapters and its national executive attended the meeting at its Abuja national secretariat.
There had been earlier reports that the various branches of ASUU had been divided over the union’s next line of action.
This, was especially as some of them voted for the suspension of the strike, while some were in favor of extending the 8-month old industrial action.
