EX-VP says League of Northern Democrats will address Northern challenges
Former Vice-President Namadi Sambo has described the newly constituted League of Northern Democrats (NLD) as a veritable platform to galvanise efforts at addressing challenges facing the North and the country generally.
Sambo said this while hosting the leadership of the forum led by its chairman, former Kano State Governor, Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau at his Abuja residence.
‘It is very worrisome to note how insecurity has crippled agriculture, while threatening education and health of our children and women.
“And these have continued to widen the net of poverty and inequality among people of the North and indeed the entire country,” he said.
Sambo while identifying with the forum, said he was committed to supporting the initiative.
He, however, tasked the forum to ensure that it continued to leverage on experiences and resources, irrespective of political lineage.
He said members of the forum must play their part in order to meet the aspirations of the people of the region while engendering sustainable peace and socio-economic development.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the League of Northern Democrats convened by Dr Umar Ardo, was inaugurated on August 21 at a meeting attended by critical Northern elites.
The forum appointed Shekarau as its protem chairman and former House of Respective member, Emmanuel Jime as its secretary, amongst other eminent Northern Nigerians.
The forum is scheduled to hold a historic summit in Kaduna in October with Vice-President Kashim Shettima expected to be in attendance.
According to its convener, the forum is non aligned with any political party, ethnic or religious affiliations.
Its objective is to help government tackle the myriad of challenges undermining Northern states such as insecurity, poverty, illiteracy and destitution among others.
It is also expected to help address issues of unemployment and the menace of drug addiction among the youths.(https://newsatlarge.ng)
