Mrs Christy Onabu, a professional and a Religious Motivational Speaker has said that gender bias can’t stop any woman who knows her worth and responsibilities from raising to the peak of her career.
Onabu who was the keynote speaker at the inaugural Seminar of Diocesan Anglican Professional Women said this while speaking with newsmen at the event on Saturday in Abuja.
The event with the theme: “Balancing Career Success with Spiritual Commitment”, was hosted by Mrs Angela Ndukuba, wife of the Primate, All Nigeria Anglican Communion.
Onabu who retired as a Director from the NNPC, said gender bias could not stop any woman from progressing professionally.
She added that all that was needed to raise to the peak in any career, was emotional stability, commitment and God’s grace.
She noted that in an environment where men took up to 90 per cent of positions, there would always be bias, saying this happened every where in the world, not just in Nigeria.
She said it was however unfortunate that most women in top career positions does not want their gender to raise.
“But my cooperation gave everybody the same platform to succeed irrespective of gender, with self realisation and awareness, I knew my cooperation employed me to succeed as well as the men.
“I worked with men and they were nice, the most difficult part of my career was even with women, not with men.
“Sometimes the men say it passively and we laughed over it and I stand my ground, saying I am a woman quite alright, but just look at what I can offer.
“But I must say that I had a lot of men who supported and encouraged me and made sure I got to where I got to before I retired.
“The bias does not stop anybody, ones you are emotionally stable and committed, you can work and succeed in your career,”she said.
Onabu added that woman should first understand that career was God’s calling in their lives, noting that their professions or jobs were God’s gift to humanity with spiritual commitment.
She further added that as a teacher, we could always teach according to God’s will and principles concerning the students in the school and make sure they got better.
She said as very significant part of the society, if women could balance their career, success and personal pursuit and ambition with Godly principles and obeyed God’s words, the society would become a better place.
Onabu charged women to be committed to a body prayer life, sacrifices and a consistent prayer life, noting that even with their faith in GOD, they had to speak GOD’s promises and work it into reality.
“Even your wifely duties is a work and the Bible says whatever we call work, must be done diligently,” she said.
She said if all Nigerians does their jobs diligently in accordance with God’s words in their various places of work, the menace of corruption would be completely wiped out from our society.
Quoting from the book of Proverbs in the Bible, she stressed the need of working with vision and purpose, saying in whatever profession we fund ourselves, we should be guided by our vision and purpose.
She also stressed the need to balance family and career, adding that career women should always respect their bosses and those in authority.
She charged women to always exhibit character that would show that they were trust worthy and to be spiritually minded to make desired impact and mentor others to advance in their career.
“Forgive others who offended you, so you can move forward by God,” she stressed.(https:newsatlarge ng)
