Former APC Rep members appeal for institutionalisation of internal democracy
Agency report
Former members of House of Representatives on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) have appealed to the party’s leadership to embrace principles that would institutionalise internal democracy.
Alhaji Ibrahim Zailani, Protem Chairman of the group made the appeal in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.
The statement was the forum’s reaction to the withdrawal of the proposed amendment to the party’s constitution.
The proposal sought to exclude members of the group as statutory delegates to the party’s upcoming National Convention.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the APC National Convention is scheduled to hold on Feb. 26.
New national executive members are expected to be elected to emerge from the convention at the convention to manage the party’s affairs.
The party is presently managed by Gov. Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC).
Zailani said the forum’s members were elated to see the advertorial in a national daily where the withdrawal was confirmed, adding that the decision was well thought out.
He advised the leadership of the party to ensure due diligence before very sensitive publications were made public in the future.
He expressed happiness that the party’s leadership did the needful by quickly rectifying an error that could have implications for the party’s stability.
“For us, this sort of scenario must be clearly avoided going forward.
“As a body of principal stakeholders in our great party, the APC, we are watching with keen interest events leading to the National Convention and the Presidential Primaries as they unfold.
“We reiterate our plea to the party leadership that, as a progressive entity, the onus is on our party to lead the way in espousing progressive ideologies that will institutionalise internal democracy.
“Anything short of this would mean no good for the unity and progress of our party. We place our unalloyed loyalty and support to the CECPC and the party,” Zailani said. (NAN)
